Meet Meenatchi

Meenatchi lost her husband during the war. Since then she has been taking care of their son, her two sisters, her brother and her nephew. Two of her siblings have a disability.

With two heart surgeries, Meenatchi is unable to engage in labour work. She has worked in different fields as a domestic servant, a translator and even begging to support her family. Today she has settled to making chilli powder for selling. A little support will help her provide for her whole family.

Meet Katheeja

Katheeja lost her husband during the war. Since then she has struggled to meet the basic needs of her two daughters. With a health condition that challenges her mobility time and again, she depended on her home garden and the Samurdhi subsidy she received every three months to look after her children. One daughter learnt tailoring to support the family. The other got selected to university this year.

Meet Kugatheswari

Kugatheswari became a widow with a seven-year-old son and twin girls who were only three months old. To provide for her children she began to make chilli powder with a grinder bought on credit and selling to her neighbours. She sells the best chilli powder in the area. With a little support, she will be able to expand her business while taking care of her children.

Meet Mangayatkarasi

Mangayatkarasi is a single mother with three daughters (ages 14, 12 and 2). She supports her little family by running a little boutique at home which she started by taking a loan. She earns about LKR10,000 (USD 52) a month which she uses to cover school and household expenses, for medical needs of her mother and to buy new stocks. A little help can support her to expand her shop and include other essential items for her customers.

Meet Pathmini

Pathmini is a mother of ten, nine girls and one boy. Seven of her daughters are married. She looks after her son who is still schooling and two of her grandchildren who live with her.

Since her husband’s death 15 years ago, she has looked after her children by making and selling foods and snacks. Now she is settled to rearing goats to support those at home. She wants to expand it so she can make sure her son and both her grandchildren receive a good education.

Meet Theveshwari

Since her husband’s death, Theveshwari accepts any work she finds; labour work in paddy fields and cultivation farms, cutting grass in gardens, drying fish and selling them by going from house to house to provide for her children and to keep them in school.

She couldn’t help her son complete school, but she is determined to help her daughter to do so. With a little help, she can improve her dry fish business and provide for her family and her daughter’s education.

World Vision Lanka has identified six women from Welikanda and aims to support them in building a sustainable livelihood according to talent, skill, and resources at their disposal. Each beneficiary will receive a grant of LKR 55,000 to expand and improve their present livelihood.
